LUTRON LEADS IN SENSORS AND ENERGY CONTROL
Lutron’s wireless sensors are often a cheaper solution and far less labour.
Our wireless sensors have much farther range, which means you don’t need as many sensors, however, our wireless sensors are PIR-type only. So jobs asking for ultrasonic or dual-technology will require additional consultation to determine the revised layout with Lutron wireless sensors. Best of all, the Lutron wireless system is scalable, so it can be field-upgraded to include true daylight-harvesting for under $100.
A Brief Look at the Dimmable LED Market 2012
A Brief Look at the Dimmable LED Market
2012
By: Eric Kimla, P.Eng.
Consumer demand for dimmable-LED lighting has seen steady growth over the past few years, but the industry has yet to finalize on standards regarding its method for dimming. Consequently, lamp manufacturers are making dimmable LED lighting with a wide variety different types of circuitry (LED drivers). Unfortunately this means that it is often difficult to achieve the smooth dimming performance like with incandescent lighting. Why? Two possible reasons: (1) The driver itself might not perform well, (2) the dimmer doesn’t pair up well with driver. When the driver is at fault, there is little that a good dimmer can do to improve the performance, as it’s a problem with the light itself. However when a good driver is used, one may think it is just a matter of selecting the right dimmer. Frequently, it is recommended to just use the standard incandescent/MLV/ELV dimmers with LED drivers, but these dimmers were designed decades ago, way before LED lighting was mainstream. These recommended dimmers don’t always perform to expectations, and from an engineering standpoint, may not be well paired with the driver in question. Yet the demand for LED lighting is so high, that some installers are literally doing their own experiments on job sites or in their shop by testing out a variety of dimmers until they see acceptable performance. However, this sort of field experimentation does not guarantee adequate performance in the future since it usually lacks the engineering rigor required to ensure long-term reliability. Furthermore, the dimmers are often not even cUL listed for use with LED, and certainly not warranted.
The truth is that dimmers must be engineered to match the LED driver, and since there are so many types of drivers, it’s proving to be difficult to offer a single/universal LED dimmer. It’s reasonable for consumers to want a reliable, universal LED dimmer, but until the industry can settle on standards, each (lamp + dimmer) combination needs to be tested as a different system, on a case-by-case basis, to obtain cUL approvals, and performance guarantees. Fortunately, Lutron is well versed in this sort of system engineering. In fact, Lutron’s LED Centre of Excellence evaluates LED lighting and publishes their test results in the form of detailed report cards at:
www.lutron.com/ledtool
Now with respect to the 120V retrofit lamps, Lutron has gone a step further. The new C.L series ofdimmers address the performance problems associated with 120V dimmable-LED and dimmable-CFL lamps. Its also a “future-proof” solution since it can simultaneously control incandescent, dimmable-CFL and dimmable-LED medium base retrofit lamps. Equally important is that Lutron continues to test and obtain cUL listings on new lamps for use with the C.L dimmer. This approved bulb list is date-stamped, updated frequently, and available at:

In summary, Today’s LED market is much like the wild west”, and a “buyer beware” strategy should be used. If you are considering the installation of dimmable LED lighting, it would be wise to examine these two websites, and be mindful of the issues we are facing today due to the lack of standards. Lutron is working with industry to help develop the standards and raise awareness, and the C.L dimmer is a great example of how Lutron is committed to the LED lighting revolution.
